The ruru, New Zealand's native owl, has large, staring eyes and a mournful cry, echoed by its name. Ruru provide a rich source of symbolism for Māori. Their haunting cry and watchful nature are linked with tapu (spiritual restriction), guardianship, forewarning, grief and awareness.
Morepork are nocturnal, hunting at night for large invertebrates including beetles, weta, moths and spiders. They will also take small birds, rats and mice. They fly silently as they have soft fringes on the edge of the wing feathers. They catch prey using large sharp talons or beak. By day they roost in the cavities of trees or in thick vegetation. If they are visible during the day they can get mobbed by other birds and are forced to move.
This series of work is a way to express the awakening between humans and nature that we could have. Letting Mother Nature and her creations teach us to how embrace and breathe the wonders of this world, to get back into sync and stop destroying the treasures and protect them instead – ‘to reconnect with nature’. Letting the whispers of nature influence our actions. Reconsider the fundamental abilities to survive, to feel alive, and challenge our skills as an integration back to the wilder.
