Bringing Creative Events to Life in Eastern BOP and Whakatāne

Journey with Arts Whakatāne

In the picturesque town of Whakatāne and the winder Bay of Plenty, known for its stunning landscapes and warm community, there was something that seemed missing from the vibrancy of our daily lives—creative events, and an arts ‘HUB’ that not only entertain but also inspire and connect us. Recognising this gap, I felt a strong pull towards creating opportunities not just for myself, but for the entire community of local artists, performers, and creative enthusiasts who were seeking more platforms to express, explore, and engage.

Filling the Creative Void

Before stepping into the arena of event management, I, like many other local creatives, often found myself wishing for more artistic and cultural events in our community. There was a palpable need for spaces where artists could showcase their talents, where the community could gather to celebrate local artistry, and where the pulsating energy of creativity could be felt by all. That’s when I decided this was my place and help facilitate these experiences under the wing of Arts Whakatāne.

Collaboration with Arts Whakatane

Working with Arts Whakatane was a natural choice. They shared vision of a community enriched by art and creativity. Through this work, I have been instrumental in organising and managing events that range from music festivals like Light up Whakatāne and the Summer Arts Festival with includes Jazz in the Park, to innovative exhibitions like the OF THE SEA, and vibrant public art projects including the installation of new murals on Richardson Street, Open Studios and much more. Each event was created with the aim to not only showcase creativity but also to foster a sense of community and belonging.

Impact on Our Community

The influence of these creative events on our small town has been profound and far-reaching. For the local economy, these events have attracted visitors from neighboring regions, boosting local businesses and creating new opportunities for artists and entrepreneurs alike. Culturally, they have enriched the community’s spirit and broadened our collective appreciation for diverse artistic expressions.

More importantly, these events have provided a platform for local creatives to shine. Artists who once felt sidelined are now celebrated, their artworks admired by residents and visitors alike. Families come together, friendships are formed, and a sense of pride swells in our hearts as we witness the power of art in bringing people together.

Looking Ahead

As I continue this journey with Arts Whakatane, my vision is to expand our reach and deepen our impact. With the local council currently revising their Long-Term Plan (LTP), it's a crucial time to advocate for the creation of an 'Arts Hub' that could serve as a central, dynamic space for creativity and collaboration. By showing strong community support for these initiatives, we can ensure the council recognises the vital role that the arts play in our town's vitality and character. From exploring innovative artistic collaborations to engaging more extensively with the community, our goal is to create an art scene as vibrant and enriching as any other found in more traditionally "artistic" locales.
